Inspiration

Each collection has a different source of inspiration but they all share pattern in some form or another. Although I live in rural countryside I find the urban environment more inspiring. This creates an exciting tension in my work as the straight lines of the urban landscape are translated through curves and organic forms into unique sculptural pieces of jewellery.

I AM ATTRACTED TO THE DETAIL OF THINGS, THE TEXTURE OF A WALL COVERED WITH PEELING PAINT, THE PATTERN OF AN OLD MANHOLE COVER. I EXPERIENCE THESE MOMENTS AS PATTERNS, AS REPEATING SHAPES AND TEXTURES I WANT TO RECREATE IN MY WORK.

Process

I dig deep into my subject and research every aspect of it: visually, historically, geographically, scientifically… whatever and wherever seems the right direction to go. This creates a wealth of information I then apply to my initial design ideas. These drawings are developed into a series of shapes made first in paper and then in metal. The metal shapes are then manipulated into sculptural forms and developed from there, often in repetition.

Bringing Ideas to Life

This engagement with my research has led to some surprising learning and it adds a depth to each collection I couldn’t otherwise achieve. After all my research, designing, testing and experimenting I finally make a collection and bring my ideas to life. This is the magical moment when I finally see what all my preparation has led to.

Curiosity Fuels Inspiration

Each piece I create sparks new questions and opens up new avenues to explore. This is a never ending journey where every step leads to fresh discoveries and ideas. My collections are never truly finished, they are just the beginning of a new journey to be explored.

Materials

My choice of materials depends on what I am trying to say, how I want a piece to look, whether I want to add colour or a particular texture.  I will experiment with different materials until I find the perfect combination for each collection. I am open to whatever material and technique will help me achieve the results I want and is usually guided by my research into my subject.

Commitment to Craftsmanship

I am a firm advocate of traditional craftsmanship, in making work that is beautifully constructed as well as comfortable and easy to wear. Although this means every piece may take many hours or days, or sometimes longer, to make, it ensures each piece of jewellery embodies both beauty and lasting quality. By carefully hand finishing every piece there is level of quality and attention that can’t be achieved any other way.

The Personal Touch

My commitment to craftsmanship requires skill, patience and an understanding of both material and process. Although the world may have changed and new technologies are available to me the craft of the jeweller has changed surprisingly little.  I use the same techniques that have been used by metalsmiths for thousands of years and this ensures every piece of jewellery I make is both beautiful and long lasting.  This level of craftsmanship just can’t be matched by a machine and it’s what makes each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
